The Texas State University Master of Social Work (MSW) program is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), and prepares students for advanced specialized practice to help improve the well-being of individuals, families, and communities with integrity. Within the program, Social Work students must maintain high academic standards, develop the capacity to work with people from diverse backgrounds, and assist all people with any life difficulties and transitions they experience across the lifespan.
Upon completion of our rigorous and experiential academic program, students emerge as leaders in direct practice for positive change utilizing effective communication, active listening, psychoeducation, problem-solving, research, and policy analysis skills. As a part of Field Education (the practicum/internship) all students have the opportunity for real-world community engagement through required placement within the School’s extensive network of public and private community agency partners. Students will be able to integrate social work values and direct practice skills in a wide range of practice settings while becoming effective, culturally responsive, advocacy-focused, and ethical social workers.
The Foundation/Regular Degree Track is for students who do not hold a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited program. Instead, students have a bachelor degree in another field of study. The Advanced Standing Degree Track is for graduates of a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited BSW program, with a BSW obtained within the last 10 years.
Upon completion of Field Education courses (practicum/internship) and graduation, graduates are prepared with the skills to apply and move directly into intermediate or advanced level social work positions. They will be eligible to apply for the state social work licensure examination from the Association of Social Work Boards toward the LMSW, and pursue their LCSW with appropriate practice hours and supervision. MSW level social workers help people of all ages and practice in such varied fields as child welfare, mental health, education, health/medical care, social services, veterans services, and public policy settings.
