RES 3399. Research and Creative Expression.

This course provides an interdisciplinary overview of scholarly research and creative expression. Topics include qualitative and quantitative research approaches and creative processes in the arts. Representative topics may include developing research questions, experimental design, sampling, measurement, analysis, research ethics, analysis of creative processes, interpretation of creative works, and communication of results. As the first of two required courses in the IDEA Center sequence, this course introduces the development of research or creative project proposals across disciplines and prepares students for RES 4399, an independent study in which projects are completed. Prerequisite: Approval of the Director of the IDEA Center.

RES 4399. Mentored Research and Creative Expression.

This course provides students with a mentored research/creative experience. Under the supervision of a faculty member, students will participate in a research/creative expression project. This course is the second of two courses for students who opt to work on research/creative expression through the IDEA Center. Students are expected to continue the research proposal they developed in RES 3399. This project may be related to the supervising faculty mentor’s ongoing research, or it may be a novel project that the student and faculty member agree to work upon. At the course’s end, all students will share the results of their research/creative experience through participating in a research forum which is open to the university community. Prerequisite: Approval of the Director of Idea Center and RES 3399 with a grade of “C” or better.
